Making a splash: Aqueous Electreau water art by photographer Mark Mawson

1. Photographer Mark Mawson drops different hues and densities of paint to water to create complex kaleidoscopes of colour he describes as “alien”.

2. London-based Mark says: “Aqueous Electreau is the fourth in my Aqueous series, which I had the idea for after watching milk being poured into coffee. I was intrigued by the way the milk swirled and blended with the coffee and produced interesting shapes.

3. “I had seen lots of ink in water images but I wanted to produce images which had more ‘body’ to them and so I experimented using paint.

4. “The images I produce evoke the feelings of being in an alien or underwater environment or akin to falling down a rabbit hole into some strange world.

5. “I get asked a lot how I produce the images. I have worked on my technique for five years and keep it somewhat a secret as to how I actually produce the images. Producing the images is a very time consuming and laborious process but the images make it all worthwhile.”
